Jermaine Joyner, Jr.

My life before YouthBuild and AmeriCorps was not so great and I didn’t know what direction I was going in. In the past year, I lost 5 people that I was very close to- this had me in a very dark and stressful place. I didn’t talk much, nor did I communicate in a positive way. Most of the time I would be careless about people’s feelings or well-being because of the chip I had on my shoulder.

YouthBuild and AmeriCorps have changed me in many different and positive ways. I am more accepting, more caring, and more responsible. I am more open to helping others in need, and even enjoy volunteering. Just knowing I have done good for the right person is payment enough. I’ve also noticed that I’m becoming more of a people person!

I always knew that I liked to fix things. I grew up watching my uncle working construction and always told myself I would do that one day. Now that I am actually involved in the construction field, I’m having a great experience and learning a lot.

I am so grateful that I stumbled upon this program while I was playing basketball at the community center. I don’t know where I would be working or if I would have been in school if I would have not found this program. It means a lot to me that I know that there is a whole staff of people who want the best for your and have your back like a family. I’m really enjoying making a difference in my life and the lives of many others.
