Dorronda Bordley

I came into this program impassioned and enthused with this enormous goal to change the world by eradicating poverty. However, the past few months as a VISTA has been a time of growth, maturity, and focus. From the training, patience, and open-mind of my service site, I was able to learn about poverty law and educate veterans within my community on ways to prevent and overcome civil legal trauma. From my experience as an Americorps member, I went from sympathizing with veteran clients to understanding their frustration, recognizing gaps, and brainstorming how, not only my service site, but the country as a whole could improve. From the support of The Service collaborative, I was connected to this great network of like minded people who provided guidance, gave suggestions, and helped me overcome my own personal challenges. My Americorps experience transformed unwieldy passion into a centralized professional goal for public interest law---- taking me from a year to a career dedicated to those in need.
