Following a highly competitive review process, Serve New York VISTA has selected 22 of 35 proposed AmeriCorps VISTA projects across New York State for its 2018-2019 grant year. All projects have a capacity building and anti-poverty focus. The underlying goal of all selected AmeriCorps VISTA projects is to alleviate poverty through the addition of capacity building support. Approved capacity building activities include resource development, systems development/enhancement, partnership building, volunteer mobilization and outreach.
Selected Serve New York VISTA projects align with CNCS approved anti-poverty focus areas. These focus areas are: Economic Opportunity (housing, employment & financial literacy), Healthy Futures (food security & health care access), Education (academic engagement), and Veterans and Military Families (increasing the availability of free legal services to low-income Veterans). In total, 18 of the 22 projects selected this cycle are within the Economic Opportunity anti-poverty focus area. This means that because of AmeriCorps VISTA support, more individuals will have safe and affordable housing, job training and placement, and improved financial stability.

Serve New York VISTA projects are typically awarded on a three-year cycle. Year one is where the assessment of need and planning begins. Implementation typically happens in year two, while the emphasis of year three is preparing for sustainability. Capacity building can often take time (and a lot of strategizing)! VISTA members work diligently behind the scenes, transforming the organizations they serve with. Through their dedicated efforts, more individuals can benefit from the needed services these organizations offer.
