New Yorkers love their parks. Volunteers are willing to help maintain the beauty of New York’s treasured state parks and historic sites. Friends groups and volunteers are more important than ever to keep parks beautiful, clean, and welcoming for all to visit and enjoy.
I Love My Park Day is an exciting new statewide event, organized by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and local friends groups, to improve and enhance New York’s parks and historic sites and bring visibility to the entire park system and its needs. Volunteers from across the state will participate in cleanup, improvement, and beautification events at New York State parks and historic sites on Saturday, May 5, 2012. Volunteers will celebrate New York’s park system by cleaning up park lands and beaches, planting trees and gardens, restoring trails and wildlife habitat, removing invasive species, and working on various site improvement projects.
PTNY, in collaboration with OPRHP, will coordinate the event on the statewide level, providing outreach, promotion, technical assistance and this how-to organizer’s kit for friends groups to use for their individual events. Friends groups and park staff will oversee cleanup, improvement and beautification projects and work with volunteers.

As part of The Service Collaborative of Western New York, Framing Hope Warehouse is the first warehouse of its kind in the nation, offering low-cost, high-quality materials to non-profit organizations by leveraging donations from local and national retailers through Gifts In Kind
International. With over a million dollars in building and renovating resources, the Framing Hope Warehouse is stocked with lighting, doors, high-efficiency windows, cabinets, fencing, window treatments, tile, fasteners, paneling, trim, bathroom fixtures, and much more.
Framing Hope Warehouse is a service available only to other 501C3 organizations. That means you have exclusive privileges to take advantage of what we offer.
Regular visits made to Framing Hope Warehouse are done by appointment only.

• 220 Volunteers from across Western New York
• 4 Picnic tables constructed for Roswell Park Cancer Institute
• 36 Bird houses constructed for urban gardens managed by Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo
• 4000 sq. ft. of painting at The King Center Charter School
• 3 elderly residences received small home repairs (Project Naomi with volunteers from the University of Buffalo)
• Over 200 homes on the East Side of Buffalo received fire prevention information (American Red Cross Buffalo Chapter)
• 140 meals to 70 Meals on Wheels participants in five communities of Buffalo
• Assisted in the rehabilitation for a Habitat for Humanity house
• Created 100 'Thank You" cards for Veterans and Active Military Members

Volunteers will deliver food to the elderly, provide assistance for elderly and physically disabled individuals with home repairs/maintenance, build bird houses for urban gardens, engage in fire prevention outreach, construct picnic tables for Roswell Park Cancer Institute and assist in the expansion of The King Center Charter School with a large scale painting project. A free luncheon will be provided for volunteers and community members.

Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money” – in other words, scrip is gift certificates from national and local retailers. They’re the same gift certificates that you buy at the store. Many popular retailers participate in our scrip program including JCPenney, The Gap, Target, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster and many, many others.
You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It’s simple -- scrip participating retailers agree to sell gift certificates to our organization at a discount. People like you buy the certificates for full face value, they redeem them for full face value, and our organization keeps the difference as revenue. And scrip is exciting, because everybody wins:
The beauty of scrip is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money for our organization without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with scrip at the stores that participate in the scrip program! And scrip can be used for just about any household purchase including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline and even dining out.
Participating is simple. Download the order form here. Return it to us with payment. First order is due on 11/23/11 and second order is due 12/12/11. Orders arrive in approximately one week and will be in available for pickup.

On Tuesday, November 1, the Board of The Service Collaborative of WNY unanimously appointed Kate Sarata at the permanent Executive Director of the agency. Ms. Sarata has been serving at the Acting Executive Director since April 1, 2011.
"Ms. Sarata's dedication and commitment to the agency, coupled with her superior results as the Director of AmeriCorps Builds Lives through Education (ABLE), made her an excellent choice for Executive Director [by the Board]", says John Greenan, Board Chair.
Kate Sarata has been with the organization, which began administering AmeriCorps grants in 1994, since 2004. Beginning her journey with National Service as an AmeriCorps*VISTA member, she was hired as staff with the ABLE program in 2006. In 2009, she was promoted to Director of ABLE, which she will leave to become Executive Director. She received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science and International Studies from SUNY Brockport and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Education at the University at Buffalo. She holds certificates in Non-Profit Management from SUNY Brockport and the Harvard Business School Club of Buffalo. She was also honored in 2010 as a Buffalo Business First 40 Under Forty. Currently, she is participating in Leadership Buffalo-Rising Leaders.
"I'm thrilled to be able to harness my compassion for service within Western New York as Executive Director of The Service Collaborative. To continue serving our community and allowing individuals the opportunity to serve is a dream come true for me" says Ms. Sarata.
